Governor Edward Mutahi Kahiga was sworn in as the fourth Governor of Nyeri County on 13 November 2017.
Governor Kahiga is an accomplished educationist, trade unionist and business leader. He served as the Deputy Governor briefly under the late Governor Dr. Wahome Gakuru.
Prior to joining political leadership, he served as the Executive Secretary of the Kenya Union of Teachers in Nyeri for seven years. He has also successfully steered the Regional Athletics Kenya Association as the Secretary General for ten years. He began his career as a teacher and administrator across various Nyeri schools and is deeply passionate about education, skills development and social empowerment – all critical ingredients for economic development.
The Governor has also served diligently as a leader in the Cooperative movement. He is one of the founding members and directors of the NewFortis and Teacher’s Plaza Housing Savings and Credit Co-operative Societies, organizations that have witnessed massive growth in membership and savings during his tenure.
The focus of the Governor and his administration for the next five years is in efficiently and effectively executing the County Integrated Plan in alignment with Kenya’s Vision 2030 and the President’s Big Four Agenda. The Governor is specifically focused on improving access to affordable and quality healthcare, enhancing the County’s agricultural processing capability and food security, and increasing the inventory of affordable housing. The Governor’s vision is anchored on transforming the lives of the people of Nyeri through an enabling, transparent and accountable government.
The Governor holds a Bachelor of Education degree from the University of Nairobi and a Masters in Education Leadership from the Kenya Methodist University.
